Malin Kundang

English

Once upon a time, in a remote fishing village in West Sumatra, lived a young man named Malin Kundang. He had only his mother, Mande Rubayah, an old widow who spent her life selling cakes and catching fish just to get by.

Malin was a hardworking youth, but his heart was always restless. He often stood on the shore, gazing at the eastern horizon while muttering, "I do not want to die in poverty in this village." With firm determination, he asked his mother’s permission to go abroad and seek his fortune by joining a large merchant ship that was docking nearby.

**Separation and Loyalty**

Mande Rubayah saw Malin off with tears streaming down her cheeks. "Go, my son. Chase your dreams, but do not forget your mother and your God," she advised.

Years passed. Mande’s hair turned completely white. Every afternoon, she stood at the pier, watching the incoming ships, hoping that one name would be called: Malin.

**The Merchant Returns**

One morning, a magnificent ship decorated with gold docked at the pier. All the villagers gathered, mesmerized by its luxury. From the ship descended a gallant man dressed in silk, accompanied by a beautiful woman.

Mande Rubayah, with failing eyesight but a sharp heart, recognized a birthmark on the man’s hand. "Malin! That is Malin, my son!" she cried as she ran toward him, stumbling. She immediately threw herself at the man’s feet, dirtying his silk robes with dust and tears.

**A Heartbreaking Denial**

Malin’s beautiful wife was shocked and asked, "Who is this filthy old woman, my husband?"

Shame instantly burned in Malin's heart. Now a man of high standing, he felt his pride would crumble if he admitted that this ragged woman was his mother. Malin kicked his mother’s hand away and shouted, "Go away, old woman! My mother could never be as filthy as you!"

Mande Rubayah collapsed. Her heart, which had been filled with longing all these years, instantly shattered into pieces. With her remaining strength, she raised her hands to the sky and whispered through painful sobs:

"O God, if he is not my son, let him continue his journey. But if he is truly Malin, my son, punish him for his wickedness!"

**Nature's Wrath and Eternity**

The clear sky suddenly turned pitch black. Thunder roared as if splitting the earth. A giant wave crashed against Malin’s magnificent ship.

In a state of overwhelming terror, Malin realized his mistake. He knelt upon the wreckage of his ship, attempting to prostrate and beg for his mother's forgiveness. However, it was too late. His body slowly grew stiff, turned cold, and transformed into a stone, frozen in a position of prostration forever.

**Lessons We Can Learn**

This story is not merely about a curse, but a reminder that:

1. **A Mother is Sacred:** The prayers and blessings of parents are the keys to safety in this world and the hereafter.
2. **Never Forget Your Roots:** Wealth and status are merely temporary; do not let them cause us to lose our humanity and our origins.
