Lutung Kasarung

English

The story begins in the Kingdom of Pasir Batang, when the elderly Prabu Tapa Agung decided to abdicate. Instead of choosing his eldest daughter, he appointed his wise youngest daughter, Purbasari, as his successor. This ignited a fire of jealousy in the heart of the elder sister, Purbararang. Feeling her pride wounded, Purbararang conspired with a sorcerer to cast a curse that covered Purbasari’s entire body in black spots. Using the excuse that her sister was cursed and unfit to lead, Purbararang exiled Purbasari into the wild forest.

At nearly the same time, in the heavens, a prince named Sanghyang Guruminda was punished and sent down to earth due to a mistake. He transformed into a black monkey, who later became known as Lutung Kasarung. Fate brought them together in the middle of the forest. Although initially cautious, Purbasari eventually felt comfortable as the monkey was very attentive and could communicate in a magical way.

One night, by the power of God, Lutung Kasarung created a lake with crystal-clear water. He asked Purbasari to bathe there. A miracle occurred; instantly, Purbasari’s skin became clean once again, and her beauty shone more radiantly than ever before. News of Purbasari’s healing reached Purbararang, who then went to the forest to present impossible challenges in order to maintain her throne.

Purbararang challenged her sister to everything from a hair-length competition to a contest of their fiancés' handsomeness. In the final challenge, Purbararang arrogantly showed off Indrajaya, a dashing man who was her husband-to-be. Pressed into a corner, Purbasari finally pointed to Lutung Kasarung as her partner. Purbararang’s mocking laughter stopped instantly when Lutung Kasarung meditated and transformed back into his true form, Sanghyang Guruminda, a prince whose handsomeness was unmatched by any human.

The truth was finally revealed and Purbararang’s wickedness was exposed. Even though her sister had acted maliciously, the noble-hearted Purbasari chose to forgive her. Purbasari returned to the palace and ruled the Kingdom of Pasir Batang justly, with Sanghyang Guruminda by her side.
