In the Kingdom of Daha, East Java, lived a powerful priest named Sidi Mantra. He had a son named Manik Angkeran. Unfortunately, Manik grew up to be a young man who loved to gamble and live lavishly until his mountain of debt was no longer manageable. Out of great affection, Sidi Mantra meditated and received guidance to seek help from Naga Basukih at the foot of Mount Agung.
The kind-hearted Naga Basukih was willing to provide gold scales and jewels from his body to settle Manik's debts. However, the gold was gone in an instant because Manik could not stop gambling. Feeling unsatisfied and driven by greed, Manik stole his father's sacred bell and went to meet Naga Basukih on his own.
As the Dragon appeared and turned his back, Manik saw a large gem at the tip of the dragon's tail. He recklessly cut off Naga Basukih's tail and fled. Infuriated by the betrayal, Naga Basukih licked Manik Angkeran's footprint, which instantly caused the young man to burn into ashes.
The grieving Sidi Mantra pleaded with Naga Basukih to revive his son. The Dragon agreed on the condition that his tail be made whole again. With his supernatural powers, Sidi Mantra reattached the dragon's tail, and Manik returned to life.
Realizing that his son needed to learn independence and atone for his mistakes, Sidi Mantra decided that they could no longer live together. He drew a line on the ground with his sacred staff to separate the islands of Java and Bali. Sea water overflowed to fill the line, creating the strait we now know as the Bali Strait.
Moral Message:
Greed and betrayal not only harm oneself but can also separate us from the people we love.
