Stephen Hawking

English

Born exactly 300 years after the death of Galileo Galilei, the young Stephen Hawking was a brilliant yet somewhat laid-back student at Oxford University. He was known as someone so intelligent that he could complete difficult weekly assignments in just a few hours, while his classmates needed days.

However, as he entered the age of 21 and began his postgraduate studies at Cambridge, his life changed forever.

**The Verdict and the Greatest Challenge**

Stephen began to feel his body betraying him. He often stumbled and his speech started to become slurred. After a series of tests, doctors diagnosed him with ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis), a motor neuron disease.

"You only have two years to live," the doctors said at the time.

Imagine being a talented young man who had just fallen in love with a woman named Jane Wilde, only to be told that your life would soon end. Stephen was depressed for a time, but Jane's love and his immense curiosity about the universe made him rise again.

**Exploring Black Holes**

Instead of giving up, Stephen became even more driven in his work. Because he lost the ability to write or type, he trained his brain to visualize complex mathematical equations in geometric forms within his mind.

The results were extraordinary. He proved one of the most radical theories: Black Holes turned out not to be completely black. He discovered that black holes emit radiation, which we now know as Hawking Radiation. His famous equation combines quantum mechanics with general relativity:

S = (Akc³)/(4Gℏ)

**The Iconic Voice from a Magic Box**

In 1985, Stephen lost his voice completely after a tracheostomy procedure due to pneumonia. From then on, he communicated using a computer with an electronic voice that has now become his trademark. Although his voice sounded stiff and robotic, Stephen actually liked it and refused to replace it with a more "human" voice, because that voice had become his identity.

He wrote the book *A Brief History of Time*, which sold millions of copies worldwide. He wanted laypeople to understand how beautiful the universe is, without needing to be a physics professor.

**The End of the Journey Among the Stars**

Stephen Hawking outlived the doctors' predictions by more than 50 years. He traveled the world, met the Pope, flew in a zero-gravity aircraft, and even appeared in the series *The Big Bang Theory* and *The Simpsons*.

He passed away on March 14, 2018 (exactly on Albert Einstein's birthday). His ashes were interred at Westminster Abbey, between the graves of Isaac Newton and Charles Darwin.
