Danau Ranau

English

Once upon a time, on the border of West Lampung and South Sumatra, there stood a Banyan tree so giant that its canopy covered the sky and blocked sunlight from reaching the earth. Due to the eternal darkness beneath the tree, the villagers' crops could not grow, and famine began to strike.

The village elders finally agreed to fell the sacred tree. However, every time an axe was swung and the tree trunk was wounded, a strange miracle occurred: the next day, the trunk would be whole again as if it had never been touched. This miracle continued to repeat until a powerful young man arrived who knew the secret of the tree. He ordered the villagers to chop it down relentlessly and burn every chip of wood that fell so that they could not fuse back together.

When the Banyan tree finally fell with a thundering sound, another miracle appeared. From the hole of the uprooted roots, water gushed out very swiftly and clearly. The water did not stop flowing until it submerged the surrounding valley. The panicking villagers began to shout that the place had become a "Rantau," or a new land for wandering, which over time changed in pronunciation to "Ranau."

Legend also mentions that behind the clarity of the water, a great dragon resides to maintain the balance of the lake. Meanwhile, the remnants of volcanic power from the past transformed into Mount Seminung, which stands tall on its shores, as if being an eternal protector of the beauty of the blue water.

To this day, Lake Ranau continues to radiate a magical charm. In its center emerged Marisa Island, which holds hot springs—a reminder that behind its serenity, there are fire and natural forces that once shaped this place. The cool air and the vast expanse of water serve as silent witnesses to the struggle of ancient people against the darkness of the Banyan tree in order to achieve a brighter life.
