The story begins when La Dana and a friend attended a funeral ceremony (Rambu Solo'). Because they helped with the funeral preparations, the host rewarded them with a large and fat buffalo.
However, there was one problem: there was only one buffalo, while there were two of them. La Dana's friend wanted to slaughter the buffalo immediately and divide the meat, but the greedy La Dana had another plan so that he could have the whole buffalo for himself.
**La Dana's Deception**
La Dana then proposed an idea that sounded reasonable but was actually a trap:
"My friend, instead of slaughtering it now and having the meat run out quickly, it is better for us to raise it first until this buffalo grows even larger. Let’s just divide the parts now. You take the back part, and I'll take the front."
His friend agreed. However, a few days later, La Dana began his scheme. He intentionally beat the buffalo's head until the animal went into a frenzy and ran hither and thither.
When his friend protested because the buffalo was in pain, La Dana casually replied:
"This is my front part; it's up to me what I do with it. If you don't want your back part to be disturbed because it's running around, then fine, just give your part to me."
**The "Buffalo in the Water" Strategy**
After successfully owning the entire buffalo, La Dana still had to deal with other friends who also wanted a share.
One day, while leading his buffalo, he met a group of people. La Dana pretended that his buffalo could speak and tell fortunes. He submerged the buffalo in mud or water until only its nose was visible, then he whispered as if he were having a discussion with the animal.
With various word-manipulation tricks, La Dana always managed to convince others that he was logically "correct," even though he was actually deceiving them for personal gain.
**Moral Lesson**
The story of La Dana is a satire about misused ingenuity. Although La Dana always wins because of his cleverness, this story is often used to remind society to:
* Do not easily believe in promises or offers that appear unfair from the start.
* Cleverness without integrity will only harm others and create hostility.
* Understand the importance of being vigilant against deception.
