Legenda Danau Toba

English

One afternoon, luck came to Toba. His fishing hook was caught by a large, shimmering golden fish. Just as he was about to cook it, the fish suddenly pleaded not to be eaten and transformed into a very beautiful woman.

The woman explained that she was a cursed princess. As a token of gratitude for being freed, she was willing to become Toba's wife, but with one absolute condition:

"Never bring up my origins as a fish. If this promise is broken, a great disaster will occur."

Toba agreed, and they lived happily until they were blessed with a son named Samosir.

**The Broken Promise**

Samosir grew up to be a somewhat naughty child who was always hungry. One day, his mother asked Samosir to deliver lunch to his father in the fields. On the way, Samosir's hunger became unbearable. He ate most of the meal and left only a few scraps for his father.

Toba, who was tired and hungry from waiting under the scorching sun, was furious when he saw that only leftovers remained. In a peak of rage, he shouted at Samosir:

"You insolent child! Truly the offspring of a fish!"

Instantly, the sky grew dark. Toba was startled; he realized he had broken his sacred promise, but it was already too late.

**The Formation of the Lake**

Samosir ran home crying and complained to his mother. The mother was saddened because her husband had broken his word. She told Samosir to run to the highest hilltop.

Shortly after, the earth shook violently. Water gushed out from the ground until it submerged the entire village. The mother turned back into a fish, and Toba drowned in the vast expanse of water.

That giant pool of water is what we now know as Lake Toba. Meanwhile, the land in the middle, where Samosir saved himself, became an island named Samosir Island.

**Moral Message:** Guard your words and hold fast to the promises you have made, for a moment of anger can destroy everything.
